Wireless Router
If you jumped on the broadband
wagon a few years ago, you may have been supplied with a USB ADSL modem by
your ISP, like the Speedtouch 330 or BT Voyager 105. Although there's
wrong with USB ADSL modems, sharing your broadband with other computers in
your home can be cumbersome to configure and you will be restricted to a
wired network. A downside of USB modems is the lack of
firewall built in to protect your computer from hackers - they rely on your
computer's firewall for security (either Windows XP firewall or a 3rd party
Internet security package).
You do not have to keep your USB modem, you can upgrade to a
wireless router and enjoy wire-free connectivity on multiple computers
throughout your home. As we mentioned above, a wireless router has a built
in firewall to help protect your computer from hackers and Trojan viruses.
One point to bear in mind is that you must enable wireless security, also
known as encryption. This is a simple task that is covered in the your
router manual.
Introducing Billion Wireless Broadband
Routers
We believe Billion offer reliable, feature packed, simple to operate
wireless routers at an affordable price and it is not just us - they have
won numerous awards in the press.
Billion routers are compatible with Be
There broadband and support 24Mbit downloads and 2.5Mbit uploads, also known
as Annex M.
Depending on your requirements, there are
a few options we recommend:
1) I want to wireless
network my computers and laptops as cheap as possible
If you want to enjoy wireless Internet
access on one or more computers in your home on a tight budget, the
BiPAC 7800 wireless router is an excellent
choice. With wireless speeds up to 300Mbit, it provides adequate speed for
the general user who doesn't require maximum performance.
Laptop users: There is a good
chance your laptop will support 802.11b/g wireless as standard. Check your
manual or contact the manufacturer if you are unsure. If your laptop doesn't
have wireless, or if the built-in wireless has stopped working, you can buy a cost
effective
BiPAC 3012G USB
wireless adapter to allow connection to the wireless router.
Desktop computer users: If you want
to connect a desktop PC to the wireless broadband, you will need to buy a wireless adapter, which plugs
in to a USB port on the desktop. You can buy
a money saving bundle that includes wireless router and USB wireless adapter
on this page. If you have more than one
desktop, just buy as many USB wireless adapters as you need from
this page.
2) I want high speed
300Mbit wireless, or I need improved wireless coverage
If you want maximum performance
on your wireless network, or need to increase wireless coverage, the
BiPAC 7800N provides the latest draft 802.11n
wireless that operates at 300Mbit. Using a combination of three antennas and
clever software, the BiPAC 7300N increases range and throughput over long
distances making it a good choice for any one living in a large house or
flat.
Laptop users: 802.11n wireless is a
new wireless standard - you must check if your laptop supports the standard,
or you will not benefit from the faster speeds and increased range.
If you want to connect a laptop that doesn't support 802.11n wireless, you
will need to buy the
BiPAC 3010N
USB wireless adapter.
Desktop computer users: You will need to buy
the BiPAC 3010N USB wireless
adapter to enjoy 300Mbit wireless on your desktop computer.
3) I have Cable Broadband, what are my options?
If you want to share your Cable broadband via wireless the
BiPAC 7800N is perfect for the job, as one of
the built-in LAN ports can be configured to connect to your existing Cable
modem / router. Your purchase is future proof too, as the router is also
compatible with ADSL should you move to a non-Cable area in the future.
The BiPAC 7300N supports either 802.11b/g
operating at 54Mbit, or the faster 802.11n wireless standard running at
300Mbit. Depending on the type of computers you are trying to connect, you
may need to purchase an additional USB wireless adapter to use 802.11n
wireless.
Laptop users: If you are happy with
802.11b/g wireless, there is a good chance your laptop already supports this
standard. However, if you want to take advantage of the 300Mbit 802.11n
wireless, you may have to buy the
BiPAC
3010N USB wireless adapter. Check your manual, or contact your
manufacturer if you are not sure which type of wireless your laptop
supports.
Desktop computer users: You need to
purchase a USB wireless adapter for your desktop. If you are happy with
802.11b/g wireless running at 54Mbit speed, buy the
BiPAC
3010G wireless adapter. If you want high performance 802.11n wireless,
buy the
BiPAC
3012N adapter.
