Mobile Broadband FAQ

Q: What is Mobile Broadband?

A: Mobile Broadband is a wireless broadband technology that allows you to connect to the Internet without a landline and while your on the move. It's ideal if you have a laptop, but it can still be used in a desktop computer. If you want to share the 3G connection via wireless, you will need a Wireless 3G router.

Q: Do I need a telephone line before I can get Mobile Broadband?

A: No - Mobile Broadband uses wireless technology to connect to the Internet, so no landline is required.

Q: How fast is Mobile Broadband compared to ADSL Broadband?

A: Mobile Broadband operates at various speeds depending on the provider and the technology being used. The fastest speed available is 7.2 Mbps using HSDPA (you don't want to know what that stands for!), although only in limited areas. 1.2 Mbps to 1.8 Mbps is a more common speed, which compares to ADSL broadband quite well.

Bear in mind that everyone thought 512Kbps ADSL was very quick when it was first released. The figures above mean Mobile Broadband is two to three times quicker than 512Kbps, to put it in perspective.

Q: Can 3G be used with a router?

A: Yes, you can use your 3G USB modem or stick with something called a 3G router. It allows you to share your 3G USB modem or stick via wireless, so more than one computer can use the 3G connection. We sell a wide range of 3G routers for all sorts of applications, but if you have a 3G modem or stick we recommend the Billion BiPAC 7402GXL. You can check your 3G modem is compatible at the bottom of the GXL's product page.

Q: Can I share my 3G USB modem dongle using a wireless router?

Yes. See above.

Q: Do I have 3G coverage in my area?

A: You can check 3G network coverage using the links on our 3G Coverage page. We always recommend that you check coverage before you buy a dongle.

Q: I don't want a contract, what are my options?

A: There are several 3G Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband options available from 3 Mobile and T-Mobile. View our Mobile Broadband comparison for details.

Q: Can I use Skype on Mobile Broadband?

A: Many of the tariffs in our comparison allow you to use Skype across the Mobile Broadband connection. You can check by visiting the Mobile Broadband comparison page, then scroll to the right and looking for a in the Skype column.
